Project Proposals

Language. It matters. Words have the power to change the world.

America prides itself on being the land of free speech. But for Orthodox Christians in the English-speaking world, the language of their worship is largely enslaved - enslaved by copyright laws that stifle healthy competition to produce quality liturgical texts and books.

Enter Law of Liberty Press.

The mission of Law of Liberty Press is to produce and compile a body of Orthodox Christian liturgical translations in English that is beautiful, internally consistent, and licensed under a Creative Commons license, permitting anyone to use it, for profit, without permission.

Texts will be released to the public once finalized after input from experts in linguistics, liturgics, and theology. Our working plan is to then partner with established printing houses to produce hard copies of liturgical books.

How can you help?

  1. First and foremost, we ask the aid of your prayers and moral support.
  2. Support the organizer of this project financially by purchasing audio recordings at www.ocrb.org.
  3. Stay tuned for ways ways in which you can contribute your scholarly expertise! We'll be needing translators, editors, programmers, a copyright lawyer, etc.
  4. If you own the rights to a liturgical translation, we invite you to join us by granting us permission to create derivatives (adaptations and remixes) of your translation. Although you could simply release your translation under the Creative Commons BY-SA license (which permits commercial use and remixes/adaptations), this creates the risk that other publishers will alter your translation at will, creating multiple new translations instead of moving toward homogeneity.

We invite Orthodox Christians and Orthodox publishing houses everywhere to join us in this quest for unity and liberty in our liturgical language. The task is enormous, but it is not insurmountable.
